We are FLIR Systems, and we create technology that enhances human perception. That’s what we mean by, “The World’s Sixth Sense.” We are best known as a world leader in thermal imaging, but we also create a host of other detection technologies that increase awareness and personal safety “For Your Life” (consumer), “For Your Work” (professional/industrial) and “For Your Mission” (law enforcement/military).

Our products are diverse, and so are the markets we sell to. We are global and growing. And we are looking for a rock star Director of Public Relations who will design and implement an overall public relations strategy that will help make FLIR a household name.

The Director of PR is a new position that involves equal parts “big picture strategy” and “nuts and bolts” implementation. In other words, you will need to be a thought leader who can mind the details. And because it’s a new role, this could be your chance to build your dream job. 

FLIR is a technology company, so you will ideally have a background working in the tech space. We don’t expect you to know thermal science up front, but you’ll need to be a quick study. We launch multiple products every year, and are expanding our reach into consumer markets.

You’ll report to the Senior VP/Chief Marketing Officer and manage a mid-sized team.

On any given day you might plan a press event for a tradeshow in Vegas, explain the basics of infrared with a writer at Gizmodo, discuss an upcoming product launch with FLIR executives, or pitch Hollywood producers with the idea of using FLIR cameras in an upcoming superhero flick.

What you will do:

  • Develop and coordinate internal and external public relations strategies in
    support of six distinct business lines

  • Be the chief point of contact for media (Hint: your phone will be your constant companion)

  • Find strategies for increasing FLIR exposure in mass media, trade magazines, and
    online channels

  • Work in concert with vertical marketing directors, executive staff, and product managers to ensure PR plans are accurate, on point, and adhere to FLIR branding standards

  • Develop high impact media campaigns, especially in support of international product launches

  • Promote FLIR as a thought leader in the detection and thermal imaging industries

  • Manage your department budget and work schedules with aplomb

  • Oversee and champion FLIR’s social media activities, collaborating with internal support staff

Qualities you will need to thrive in this position:

  • You are an experienced PR professional with strong knowledge and relationships with key media

  • You have demonstrated success building online and social media presence for a global company

  • You ideally have combination of agency and in-house experience (but especially in-house)

  • You have managed the PR campaigns of major product launches—from preparing media kits to orchestrating press events

  • You are a collaborative, team player with a high degree of initiative, drive, accountability, judgment, and flexibility

  • You are an outstanding writer, editor and grammar cop (Knowledge of AP Style is a plus)

  • You are undaunted at the thought of explaining thermal technology accurately and
    authoritatively on the spot without notes

  • You have demonstrated experience managing and inspiring small teams of employees who
    would say good things about you

  • You are eager to travel domestically and internationally–up to 50 percent of the time

  • You are adept at working with journalists, editors, and bloggers working on deadline

Desired Skills and Experience:

Prior experience in a PR role within a global company, preferably a high tech or manufacturing company that markets to consumers.

Bachelor’s degree or higher.

10 - 15 years relevant experience, including experience in PR implementation and proven ability managing domestic and international projects.

Proven effectiveness in developing and executing media plans.

Excellent interpersonal skills - ability to work with executives across diverse groups and translate complex concepts into clear, concise and compelling messages for the media.

Proficient in measuring and reporting on the progress of public relations initiatives against goals.

Hi Bonny, could you elaborate on the top things you are looking for in a candidate?

  • Bonny Hannah     The candidate should have worked in an actual company (not just at a PR agency or freelance.) The company they would have worked (current or past) should be a tech company that sells products to consumers. The products their company sells should be consumer electronics. The type of PR work they would have done would be product and tech related PR (like product launches.) They should be familiar with modern type of media outlets, like Gizmodo for example. Someone coming from a mid-sized global company would be the best. They need to be okay with 50% travel. Candidates that would have worked for a company that participates in the annual CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas would be ideal.

Is this position still active?

  • Bonny Hannah     Yes, this position is still active. We are being very selective however on the industry background. We really want the person to have worked in-house at a company that sells products in the technology sector, preferably products that are sold directly to consumers (like consumer electronics.) Ideally they would have worked at a mid-sized or larger company 1000 employees or higher. The PR work they will have done will be around product launches and technology instead of corporate communications.

  • Bonny Hannah     Yes, 15% annual bonus that is paid out. Stock options given upon hire and every year worth between $10and$30K annual. Full medical/dental/vision, company pays for majority of monthly premium. 50% 401K matching up to the IRS max of $18,500. 4 weeks vacation upon start. $300 annual gym reimbursement.
