Director External Communications
On March 27, 2014, Baxter announced plans to create two independent, publicly traded companies formed around the company's Medical Products and BioScience businesses. The company expects to complete this transaction in mid-2015, subject to market and regulatory approvals. Baxter's Medical Products business will remain a diversified company with a broad global footprint built around fluid systems, BioPharma Solutions, renal (including the recently acquired Gambro), as well as nutritional therapies, inhalation anesthetics and biosurgery products. This business will retain the Baxter International Inc. name and will be led by Baxter Chairman and CEO Bob Parkinson. It will be focused on developing new healthcare solutions in hospital, in-center and home based therapies. Baxter's BioScience business will become a leading provider of therapeutic treatments that save, sustain and improve the lives of people with rare conditions, chronic diseases or limited treatment options. Supported by advanced technical and manufacturing expertise, its broad pipeline is built on a legacy of innovation in bleeding disorders and immunology, and is expanding to address unmet medical needs in niche areas of oncology, as well as technology platforms such as gene therapy. The new company will be named Baxalta Incorporated and will be led by current BioScience President. This role of Director, External Communications is aligned to Baxalta. This position is accountable for leading the corporate external communications team and will be the external company spokesperson. Supported by advanced technical and manufacturing expertise, Baxter BioScience has a broad pipeline built on a legacy of innovation in bleeding disorders and immunology and is expanding to address emerging opportunities in niche areas of oncology as well as technology platforms such as biosimilars. As we prepare to establish the BioScience business as a separate, publicly traded company Baxalta, we are seeking to attract, engage and develop the brightest talent with a shared vision of impacting patient lives. This opportunity in Baxter BioScience will advance a strong product portfolio, our exciting lifecycle plan of product enhancements, new formulations, and new indications. The essential responsibilities are as follows: Develop and implement an integrated, progressive external communications strategy to advance Baxalta’s brand identity; broaden awareness of its programs and priorities; and increase the visibility of its programs across key external stakeholder audiences. Serve as an advisor, counselor and coach to the senior leadership team; identify external communications opportunities, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them. Work collaboratively with Investor Relations and Legal functions to insure material information is communicated in a timely fashion and in compliance with all regulatory and legal requirements. Cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media, and manage all communication aspects with key corporate partners, including external communications, press releases, Q&A preparations, and other collateral. Serve as company’s external spokesperson to media and lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization, including crisis situations. Prepare Baxalta spokespersons for engagement with media (including CEO) Develop and own content strategy for Baxter’s digital channels including Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. Support overall reputation including employment brand, sustainability, Actively engage, cultivate, and manage media relationships to ensure appropriate coverage of Baxalta strategies, programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects. Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and facilitate the preparation of talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed. Oversee development of print communications including marketing collateral materials and electronic communications including Baxalta website; manage relationships with associated vendors. Develop Baxalta communications policies and procedures including representing the company, use of digital channels, use of the Baxalta name by third parties. Build a world-class team of professionals, and inspire them to perform beyond expectations. Qualifications A minimum of 10 years’ experience in communications management with increasing responsibility, as well as experience developing communications programs for a global and matrixed organization. Minimum 10 years of public relations and/or corporate communications experience with healthcare experience (pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or medical device). PR agency experience strongly preferred. Minimum Bachelor’s degree required in relevant field (i.e., Communications, Journalism or English). Master’s degree in business, communications or related discipline preferred. Demonstrated experience leading strategic communications and media relations to advance an organization’s mission and goals. Proven record of success. Demonstrated skill in proactively building relationships with top tier partners, and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve national recognition. Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output. Experience in building, mentoring, and coaching a team of communications professionals. Proven judgment and creative problem solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution. Proven mental agility and ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs.Strong strategic thinking skills, combined with comprehensive hands-on expertise and the willingness to get deeply involved in the work. Excellent and persuasive communicator.Ability to counsel on regulatory requirements relevant to communication about and promotion of products.
