Description:The Director, R&D Communications will work to enhance Biogen’s scientific reputation externally, and support strategic internal communications activities that help align the R&D organization. This will involve communications support for members of the R&D senior leadership team, including external speaking and media opportunities, and the development of a cohesive and compelling narrative that distinguishes our R&D organization and provides a platform for discussing our pipeline candidates. The Director will develop a network of contacts within R&D and serve as the conduit to the broader Public Affairs team for information and opportunities related to R&D, including Corporate Communications, Internal Communications and Public Policy and Government Affairs. Enhance external visibility: Identify create and support meaningful opportunities (via social and traditional media, speaking engagements, etc.) that enhance the reputation of the R&D organization and Biogen as a whole Enhance R&D leadership communication: Provide communications counsel to leadership team regarding communications opportunities (including media interviews and speaking engagements), preparation for media interviews and presentations, and internal communications activities Align internal communications: Help senior leaders provide consistent and compelling messages within their organization and to the broader company about our work in R&D. Manage communications network: Develop and manage a network of information sources across the R&D organization that provide insight into noteworthy advances and activities that can be leveraged to enhance perceptions of Biogen R&D. Corporate Affairs alignment: keep Global Corporate Affairs and Investor Relations abreast of R&D initiatives and communication activities and find opportunities for collaboration. Communicate and disseminate info in a timely manner. Ten to 15 years professional experience in the public affairs arena with a focus on scientifically-driven internal and external communications in an agency, corporation or NGO in the biopharmaceutical industry •Sound leadership capability, demonstrated track record in a strategic role in which communication considerations are part •Broad communication background including external and internal communications expertise in science/medical communications, experience handling issue management, culture change •Outstanding communication, public speaking and advocacy skills •Excellent strategic and tactical execution skills and ability to multi-task •Ability to work cross-functionally and interact with senior internal and external stakeholders •Ability to work in a global and culturally diverse environment •Excellent command of the English language Bachelor’s Degree in communications, public relations or a science-related field; educational background is flexible depending on professional experience Biogen (NASDAQ: BIIB) is a biotechnology leader that discovers, develops and delivers innovative therapies to improve the lives of patients with neurodegenerative diseases, hematologic conditions and autoimmune diseases.
