Crystal Stairs is one of the largest private non-profit child development corporations in the State of California. We help families locate affordable and appropriate childcare through a variety of services, working with childcare providers, educators, advocates, and community members to positively impact the lives of more than 30,000 children each year. What We’re Looking For: We are seeking a External Affairs Director whose primary function will be to focus on design and execution of all strategic communication, public affairs and fund development for the organization, with particular emphasis on brand development, marketing, and donor relations. This individual will lead and have overall responsibility for strategically guiding all communications, including public relations messages, website and SharePoint content and marketing initiatives to consistently communicate Crystal Stair’s mission and brand. Reporting to the CEO, the External Affairs Director will effectively identify public policy issues, trends in the child care industry, maintain critical relationships with government entities as well as major individual, corporate, and foundation donors to leverage support of the Agency’s goals and mission. The External Affairs Director will identify, develop and broaden the scope of the Agency’s funding sources and grant opportunities to grow programmatic reach and impact RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Work closely with leadership and management as the communications partner to ensure that the Agency’s strategic objectives, initiatives and core services are supported by a creative communication vision. 2. Oversee and act as the gatekeeper for website content and direction. Also coordinate; manage and enhance the content and design of the Agency’s website to ensure consistent and relevant information. 3. Enhance the Agency’s social media presence through development and maintenance of all print and electronic material including, but not limited to, newsletters, blogs, brochures, external publications and website. 4. Serve as lead spokesperson with the media and as a representative of the Corporation at policy forums, educational programs, and community-based events. 5. Oversee organizational response to inquiries about the Agency and provides communication support to leadership and departments to align consistent internal and external communications and messages. 6. Audit and evaluate current policy proposals, potential changes in public funding, and contemporary studies in child care and child development, assess their implications, and provide advice and counsel to the CEO and senior management on corporate positioning and/or action. 7. Ensure that Crystal Stairs is viewed as the primary source of public policy information and advocacy initiatives as local and national leaders in our industry through Community Voices and other social outreach outlets. 8. Grow Crystal Stairs’ existing relationships as a contractor of choice for the California Department of Education and the Los Angeles County Department of Social Services and build on Crystal Stairs’ reputation as an outstanding, well-informed advocate of child development and child care issues. 9. Prepare public policy statements, testimonies, speeches and other internal/external communications for CEO approval and dissemination. 10. Anticipate public relations and external communications challenges and defuse crisis through sound preemptive management. 11. Proactively identify, develop and broaden the scope of the Agency’s funding sources and grant opportunities through relationship building, networking and social media to enhance the level of service locally and statewide. 12. Manage the development of donor solicitations, including preparation of the annual report and external newsletters. 13. Identify and support social enterprise initiatives. 14. Manage production of creative, high-quality, cost-effective communication solutions for workshops, presentations, press releases, special events, etc. 15. Establish and maintain positive and constructive relationships with Federal, State, and local government officials, and funders. 16. Other duties as assigned RESPONSIBILITIES: UNIT MANAGEMENT 1. Manage External Affairs Department and staff while providing strategic direction and leadership. 2. Communicate and educate employees on agency culture and lead by example, demonstrating a commitment to integrity, honesty, and adherence to the highest standards of ethical behavior. 3. Provide direction, leadership and coaching to staff members by conducting periodic staff meeting and frequent check-ins. 4. Provide opportunities for employees that develop their competencies. Provide career counseling and advice. Empower employees to develop themselves. 5. Provide feedback on performance, take prompt corrective action when necessary and conduct Performance Evaluation Process in timely manner. 6. Track and monitor attendance of employees including timely submission of timecard reports. 7. Select, hire well-qualified, talented staff that reflects labor market diversity. 8. Allocate and request resources that match production needs and adjust as necessary to support unit’s budget and CSI goals/mission. 9. Build strong teams that are technically competent and characterized by a high level of coordination and trust EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES YOU SHOULD POSSESS: Bachelors’ in Communications, Marketing and/or Journalism; Masters Degree or higher in Public Policy, Communication, or other relevant field preferred. Minimum of 5 years development and fundraising experience, advocacy and media relations, public policy and/or marketing experience preferred. Communications experience for a community-based organization with a similar mission preferred. Minimum 5 years supervisory experience preferred. Analytical and strategic thinker. Excellent writing, editing and interpersonal communication skills are required. Knowledge of printing/ production/ design processes/electronic media required. Knowledge of Crystal Stairs’ services area, and of government, political, corporate and community partners. Operates under minimal supervision as a point of contact for the agency, exercising latitude and judgment in decision-making process. Accountable for delivering a variety of internal and external communiqués, full line of policy-related and outreach-oriented products and services. Identifies fund sourcing streams and opportunities.
