Senior Communications Manager - US Medical Affairs

You will support the Head of USMA Communications & Strategic Relations in planning, developing, managing and ensuring successful implementation of communication and engagement strategies, plans and tactics. Your responsibilities include identifying, recommending and implementing communication and engagement strategies, plans and tactics for major events, meetings, off-sites, the USMA Portal, newsletter updates and other key tactics and projects. These activities will be accomplished by working closely with a host of internal and external partners and stakeholders, including but not limited to members of the USMA Leadership Team (MLT), the USMA Strategy Team as well as corporate and cross-functional communication groups. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: In this position, you will be primarily accountable for consistently, effectively: Supporting development of best-in-class communication and engagement strategies, plans and tactics. Defining/scoping, structuring, implementing and managing all assigned USMA Communications & Strategic Relations projects and other ongoing assignments/responsibilities, which includes efficient project management and oversight of internal and external partners and vendors. Providing in-depth communications expertise and outstanding customer service to internal customers and other stakeholders. Contributing to innovation and process improvement by working with your manager and other team members to review and implement new, leading edge and streamlined communication and engagement strategies, plans and resources. Regularly refining and honing your approach to work and deliverables in a manner consistent with continuous improvement. Developing and maintaining highly collaborative and productive relationships with all internal customers, partners and other stakeholders. Leading or otherwise participating in cross-functional or other project teams. Ensuring assigned goals and objectives are met and that assigned projects and other work are completed on time, to high standards and within budget. JOB DESCRIPTION: In this position, you will: Communications Planning: Participate in cross-functional USMA strategic planning meetings and reviews to provide context to annual and longer-range communication and engagement objectives, strategies and related tactics. Maintain in-depth knowledge of USMA organizational strategies and priorities. Work with your manager, customers, partners and other stakeholders to lead development and implementation of USMA communication and engagement strategies, plans, programs and tools to advance the organizational vision and objectives and strengthen the organizational culture. Lead activities to support the USMA brand, including development of branded communication roadshows, templates and other tools. Act as a primary contact for all assigned USMA Communications & Strategic Relations projects. Define, scope and structure USMA Communications & Strategic Relations projects and other ongoing assignments/responsibilities, which includes effective and efficient project management and oversight of internal and external partners and vendors. Execute projects that translate USMA's value and culture into visually impactful, accessible, and engaging content in multiple formats (e.g. online, print, video, etc.). Develop and implement regular and ad hoc communications and materials to support the continued communication and updating of USMA’s vision, strategy, plans, objectives and progress to internal teams and other relevant parties. Implement USMA web/intranet strategy and content to facilitate effective information sharing and build a strong USMA presence across the company. Regularly research and learn about best practices, new technologies and the like as these relate to business communications. Attend external symposia, association meetings, learning and development programs and use such knowledge to appropriately shape and influence communication support provided to internal stakeholders and customers. Communications Development & Management: Provide in-depth communications expertise and outstanding customer service to internal customers, partners and other stakeholders. Assume responsibility for specific ongoing USMA Communications & Strategic Relations responsibilities and assignments, which may include some or all of the following: Managing the design, production and maintenance of non-secured content on the USMA Portal (as a communication vehicle/device) Assisting with the preparation of materials presented by the Head of USMA at large forums/meetings, including potentially managing the design and production of such meetings Planning and coordinating communications related to USMA-wide meetings, events, off-sites, etc. Providing communication support for employee engagement activities, such as management roundtables or analogous forums Collaborate with partners and stakeholders across Genentech (e.g. Corporate Communications, Global Medical Affairs, Commercial Operations, Product Development, etc.) to support corporate-level priorities and messaging. Execute strategic communication programs and employee events that strengthen the organizational culture. Develop key organization-level messages and communicate these to internal/external stakeholders, collaborators and partners. Participate in cross-functional communication forums and working groups. Act as an internal subject matter expert and specialist consultant advising internal partners, stakeholders and customers on appropriate and targeted communication strategies, plans, tactics and resources. Provide USMA content and presence at cross-functional forums, including but not limited to Commercial National Sales Meeting, Annual Medical Directors Meeting, company-sponsored Career Fairs, etc. Collaborate with external agencies and partners supporting USMA communication programs and campaigns to ensure resulting deliverables and collateral are of the highest standards. Develop detailed project plans, which include core deliverables, responsible parties, interim review meetings and full implementation plans. Regularly monitor projects and ongoing responsibilities to track progress. Where appropriate, provide regular updates or other reporting on performance of assigned responsibilities to your manager (including all executive-level communication materials). Support manager in overseeing departmental budgets; including monitoring, tracking and reporting. Who You Are Bachelors Degree (business, public relations and/or communications discipline is preferred) MBA or other related Graduate-level Degree is preferred 6 or more years' multidisciplinary experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related industry, with an emphasis on marketing, communications, strategic planning and/or business operations A minimum of 3 years' previous communication or public relations experience, ideally some of which has been gained in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related industry Experience providing communications support to senior leaders Experience supporting efforts that build and nurture a strong organizational culture Experience developing innovative communication content and platforms Experience managing and directing external agency partners or vendor SKILLS & ABILITIES: Proven track record for meeting or exceeding objectives and goals Working knowledge of Genentech and/or Medical Affairs’ core business practices, principles, procedures, processes and primary business tools is preferred Ability, comfort & commitment in/to operating in a highly regulated environment and industry, which requires understanding of the imperative for compliance with company policies, procedures and other relevant internal or external laws, regulations and the like Strong background in executive communications and content development Strong background in event planning/management; experience with production oversight is preferred Familiarity with digital and social media Demonstrable abilities to manage more complex or larger-scale communication and employee engagement responsibilities Outstanding communication & presentation skills; with particular emphasis on business writing skills and active listening (proven abilities to communicate effectively and efficiently with various cross-functional partners, stakeholders and senior management) Exhibits professional maturity, confidence and competence.
