Director of Media Relations
Description:Merrimack is a biopharmaceutical company discovering, developing and preparing to commercialize innovative medicines paired with companion diagnostics for the treatment of cancer. Merrimack seeks to gain a deeper understanding of underlying cancer biology through its systems biology-based approach and develop new insights, therapeutics and diagnostics to improve outcomes for cancer patients. Merrimack currently has six oncology therapeutics in clinical development and three additional candidates in late stage preclinical development. Merrimack's lead product candidate, MM-398, recently completed a Phase 3 trial in post-gemcitabine pancreatic cancer. Based on the results of this trial, Merrimack is currently preparing a New Drug Application for MM-398. We are seeking a full-time Director of Media Relations who can help deliver critical messages about Merrimack, including the impact the company is having within the oncology space. The individual’s role will be focused on successfully harnessing traditional and non-traditional communications methods to support a period of important news and announcements in 2015 and beyond. As an expert communicator, the individual will be able to effectively manage relationships with key stakeholders on behalf of the company, including but not limited to, third party organizations, patients, internal team members, and local and national media. Flexibility, creativity and teamwork are going to be critical to this role as is fantastic written and oral communication skills. Qualified candidates will possess expertise and experience in communications (written and verbal), digital and social media, and adapting strategies in a fast-paced/dynamic environment. The Director of Media Relations will also have the opportunity to work with senior leadership and various departments in the organization. Job Responsibilities: Manage day-to-day operations of the public relations function, including identifying and working with experts, working with third party organizations, responding to inquiries from the public and media representatives, and budget development and tracking. Develop and implement an external communications and digital media strategy for Merrimack Manage the delivery, communication and progress reporting of consistent messages for Merrimack, including media relations, press releases, presentations, contributed articles, company events, and executive training and preparedness. Create and manage press release development, strategy, and distribution. Produce, write, and coordinate Merrimack website updates and blog posts. Prepare, organize, edit, pitch and distribute fact sheets, press releases, and other materials to media representatives and other relevant or interested parties. Coordinate media relations activities with external public relations and advertising agencies as needed. Create, implement, and oversee Merrimack’s Digital and Social Media strategy. Develop and manage an editorial calendar for social media distribution. Knowledgeable in the ‘ins and outs’ of all digital and social media channels and uses these channels effectively for work and personal use; stays up to date on social trends and industry best practices. Manage and update Merrimack’s presence on the social web, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, and other relevant and emerging social properties. Experiment with new and alternative ways to leverage social media activities to monitor trends in social media tools and applications, and appropriately apply that knowledge to Merrimack’s social media activities. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience with 8-10 years of experience in public relations; previous roles in the biotech, healthcare, or pharmaceutical industry a plus Excellent oral and written communication skills, effective presentation skills Proven commitment to Continuously Learning and Innovating Proven experience leading comprehensive social and digital media strategies Meets and exceed deadlines, ability to turn things around quickly Well-organized and self-motivated Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a dynamic environment Experience writing and executing a media and digital media plan. Experience working with high science and business media. Experience working with media with a regulated environment. Experience writing press releases. Solid writing experience, Microsoft and Adobe Suite skills. Excellent web/digital media project management. Ability to learn in a fast-paced scientific environment.
