Director Scientific Communications
Description:The Director of Scientific Communications is a member of Monsanto’s Strategic Communications group within the Corporate Engagement organization. This role leads a group of communication leaders focused on the identification and implementation of the broader communications strategies for the company’s Technology organization. This work includes leading the development of and implementation of dedicated communications strategies for the company’s science portfolio—including Biotechnology and Breeding, as well as its collaborations, as well as overseeing the strategic outreach and engagement program for the company’s Technology leaders. This position will lead and provide proactive and reactive media relations for Monsanto’s R&D/science portfolio – including across mainstream, regional, social and trade media outlets as necessary. Technology Support: This position works closely with key members of the Technology organization– including the Technology Leadership Team and their designates to develop and implement the communications strategy that supports the goals of the Technology organization, its science portfolio and our commitments. This position works closely to coordinate and support Technology-oriented communications across the company, including but not limited to scientific, regulatory, community engagement and tours, as well as other related business matters as necessary. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Identify, implement and support communication initiatives (in conjunction with the Technology organization teams) that drive greater awareness of our business and its use of science to improve lives of people around the world. Manage and lead Technology communications team members in planning and executing communications plans that require multiple teams from the Technology organization and the broader organization Shape, drive and monitor innovative communications approaches to media outreach in support of Technology organization goals and objectives Lead the development of and/or work closely with Technology teams on communications preparedness around key matters, including the R&D pipeline announcement as well as collaborations Work in parallel with other key communication initiatives led by the Global Corporate Marketing & Communications, Industry Affairs, Government Affairs and other Corporate Engagement teams to help drive awareness of company’s commitment to agriculture, stakeholders and society Media Relations: This role is responsible for working with the Strategic Communications and Corporate media teams as well as advertising teams to help develop and support a media plan, message creation and outreach and engagement strategy for Monsanto’s Technology organization. This position serves as both a spokesperson and liaison with media. This position prepares and engages members of the Technology organization for media and engagement opportunities. The successful candidate will have experience creating and fostering relationships with media. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Develop and facilitate media training, outreach activities and tools with appropriate leadership, managers and staff to prepare and engage members of the Technology organization for proactive media opportunities. Oversee and lead media strategy development and implementation of outlets that align with the objectives of the Corporate Engagement organization, building relationships with reporters by providing them with reliable and timely information and connecting them to leadership and other spokespeople throughout our organization and in the marketplace. Technology Outreach: This position works closely with Monsanto’s Technology Leaders to develop and implement the technology outreach strategy that supports the goals of the Technology organization, the Global Commercial Business as well as the Global Corporate Engagement team. This position works closely to coordinate and support Technology-outreach communications including the development of presentation and other related materials that reach the company’s core stakeholders – across farmers, business partners, science communities and identified societal stakeholders. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Manage and lead Technology Outreach Communications team members in planning and executing outreach and communications plans that require multiple teams. Lead the development of and/or work closely with Technology teams on targeting, placement and communications preparedness around key events and activities. Partnering with the executive communications function, its designated speaker’s bureau as well as the Chief of Staff office for the U.S. Row Crops business to assess speaking requests and proactively determine primary opportunities. Work in parallel with other key outreach initiatives led by the Global Commercial Business, Stakeholder Outreach and other Corporate Engagement teams, as well as Government Affairs to help drive awareness of company’s commitment to agriculture, stakeholders and society Technology Resources: This role is responsible for working with the Technology organization as well as the Corporate Branding teams to help develop and support resources that showcase Monsanto’s science portfolio and R&D pipeline in improving lives and delivering contributions to society. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Shape, drive and monitor innovative communications resources in support of the goals and objectives of Monsanto’s Technology organization and Global Commercial Business – including leading the development of materials to showcase Monsanto’s science portfolio and R&D pipeline – including the annual R&D pipeline presentation and the annual R&D pipeline brochure. Support the coordination and development of the company’s annual R&D pipeline update in conjunction with members of the Technology Operations team and broader Technology organization. Develop and facilitate training and tools in conjunction with appropriate leadership, managers and staff to prepare and engage members of the Technology organization for proactive outreach opportunities. Required skills and background: Minimum of 7 years applicable experience in public or industry relations or related communications field (within a corporate/business setting and preferable within the agriculture industry and/or sciences industry). Prior people management experience desired Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in relevant field – communications, agriculture or related scientific area Experience in media relations is required. Experience in working with members of the media is critical. Prior experience developing story pitches and securing coverage as well as responding to issues. Established relationships with mainstream and/or trade media outlets would be valuable assets as well. Strong writing, editing, listening and networking skills. The ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment – including experience working successfully with several department employees, including leadership, scientists, breeders, marketing employees and others. Significant project management experience including the ability to prioritize and juggle multiple projects concurrently while meeting critical deadlines. The ability to learn, understand and simplify business and technical information is important. Experience in corporate communications and internal communication settings would be a plus Approximately 30% domestic travel required and may be vary throughout the year.
