Description:

MSSQL Database Administrator

General Description

Performs highly complex database administration work in the Information Systems’ Technology Section.  Work involves defining, developing, maintaining, tuning, and monitoring integrated database system environments for ERS application areas.  Work is primarily within Microsoft SQL Server environments.  Works under general direction of the Database Administrator Team Lead and the Assistant Director of Information Systems with latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Provides accurate and timely system and database administration for ERS applications areas.
Installs, configures, upgrades, and patches database software and related products.
Insures the integrity, reliability and performance of the database environment for development, test, and production systems.
Provides timely technical support for environments for development, test, and production systems.
Provides technical assistance and instruction for development, end-user and operations staff to help facilitate the adherence to defined standards.
Develops and maintains standards and procedures governing version management, security, backup/recovery, database usage and performance/tuning.
Evaluates and recommends system and database management software and supporting tools.
Coordinates activities with vendors for timely implementation of software maintenance.
Assesses future information requirements in order to develop long-range, comprehensive database plans.
Attends work regularly in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
Complies with all applicable agency policies and procedures, including safety and standards of conduct.
Performs On-call or scheduled after hours work as required.

Qualification Requirements

Education and Training:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in data processing, computer science, management information systems, business or related field; or attainment of a diploma from a two-year technical school with specialization in computer technology.  Each year of related experience over the required minimum may be substituted for one year (30 semester hours) of required college credit.

 

Experience:

Five years experience in progressively difficult technical computer systems support roles, including three years experience as a MSSQL database administrator.
Technical training and/or experience with operating systems and databases as necessary to perform duties described above.
Two years experience tuning sql.
Two years experience in performance tuning MSSQL database environments.
Prefer additional experience above the required minimum in progressively difficult technical computer systems support roles.
Prefer three or more years experience as a MSSQL Server database administrator.
Prefer three or more years working with system and database management tools.
Prefer two years experience working as an Oracle database administrator.
Prefer two years experience working with Unix.
Prefer two years experience supporting PeopleSoft in an AIX environment.
Prefer experience with Business Intelligence and Data Marts/Data Warehouses
Prefer experience with Oracle Enterprise Manager, RMAN and Toad.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of development and design of systems as it relates to architecture; of project control; of database structures and theories; of current database technologies; of data analysis techniques.  The ability to identify and define user task needs; to process information logically; to conduct short-range and long-range project planning; to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments; to assess future information needs so that the databases can evolve in an appropriate manner.  Ability to follow established procedures and assist in the development of new procedures; to work in a team environment; and handle multiple projects with strong attention to detail. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

 

Special Requirements/Work Environment

Work is performed in an office environment.  Individual will have to undergo a background check prior to start date.
